Getting your Web Site Sponsored
Making money from your web site by hosting ads
Get paid per impression, per click or per action

As any web master knows, if you want to have a fast
and reliable web site, without ads from a free hosting company, it is going to cost you.
Most web hosting company's charge between 17 dollars (u.s. funds) and 30 dollars
just to host a measly 20 megabyte site with nothing more then CGI access and perhaps
Server Side Includes if you're lucky. Any extra services, such as statistics or
perhaps advertising on other sites will cost you more money then you can probably spare,
and you can forget about having a software archive on your site, since you would need a T1
line with your own server to store these files.
There are however ways of getting your site
sponsored as you shall see. There are many different ways of getting sponsored,
ranging from becoming an affiliate to a site that's trying to sell books to simply placing
ads on your pages. I prefer hosting banner ads, since I don't like asking visitors
to buy a product, and I know that I probably won't ever get anybody to buy something
through the internet.
Everybody knows what banner ads are by now
since almost every site on the internet has them. There are
however two methods of payment where these are concerned:
Combination: Will pay either
for impressions of for click-thrus depending on the advertisers
the company gets.

This is by far the best advertising company we
have come across, and that's why we use this company to serve
ads on Silicon Guide. They will pay you by click or by impression,
depending on what advertisers they can find. However, the figures
listed here are only minimums. We have personally had ad campaigns
on our site from this company that return much greater sums,
up to 1.2 $ per 1000 impressions and up to 30¢ per click.
Furthermore, they provide you with detailed statistics, which
include all the clicks (whether you get paid for them or not)
and impressions for all the different banner campaigns, as well
as where you viewers come from, what browser they are using,
etc.. They also allow you to have up to 5 different web sites,
and consolidate them all into the same account. And they allow
you to put your custom code that can be displayed should they
ever run out of the high paying banners (this rarely happens).
They even have a referral program, that will pay you for sending
people to them. And to top all of these benefits off, there
is no minimum amount of impressions necessary to qualify. |

Looks like a good sponsor, however you must be
18 years of age or older to qualify for it. |
Pay per click: These company's will
pay you a certain amout of money (usually ranging from 5¢ to 25¢) for each time a
visitor to your site clicks on one of the ads you are hosting. This is usually the
payment method of choice for sites with relatively low traffic, since there is no risk for
the sponsor.
A few company's worth considering:

The only good thing about this one is that it
has been around for a while. However, any site that
qualifies for it, would probably be better off going with
a pay per impression payment scheme. Don't let yourself
be fooled, anything above 12¢ per click is for sites that get millions of hits per month. |
Teknosurf |

Looks like it could be a good sponsor, since
it does offer more then the others, however their ads appeared
so unattractive that no one would really want to click on
them. |

Too many restrictions for anyone to be bothered
with them. |
* This is the minimum amount of
impressions that your site must get per month in order to qualify for this program.
Pay per impression: You will be
paid depending on the amount of ads that are displayed on your site (usually ranging from
25¢ to 6$ per 1000 impressions). This method is prefered by many since you get paid
for every ad displayed on your site regardless of whether a viewer clicks on it or not.
This also forces the company's to design attractive banner ads if they want to get
the most out of their advertising campaign.
A few company's worth considering:

Banner-net |

4 000 |
Looks a little bit suspicious, however it is probably the best
deal for sites that have around 6 000 hits per month and want to get paid per impression. |
Adsdaq |
25¢
to 1.35$ |

This one sucks really badly. There ads are huge and they
only pay you 25¢ per 1000 impressions. The only sites that
qualify for up to 1.35$ are those with millions of hits, who would be crazy to go with
this company. They would also seem not to be accepting any new subscribers. |
FlyCast |
6.00$ |
100 000 |
This is probably the best option for
sites with lots of traffic. |

1 000 000 |
Only for the largest sites, such as
AltaVista, etc... |
* This is the minimum amount of impressions that
your site must get per month in order to qualify for this program.
** Pay per 1000 impressions.
Pay per action: These company's will
only pay you when someone clicks on one of their ads (displayed
on your site) and that person actually signs up for the service
advertised. I don't believe in this kind of payment plan,
since it is quite rare that someone will actually click on an ad,
and then sign up for the service on top of that.

Safe

You get to pick what ads you want to host on your
site. Payment varies greatly depending on what the sponsor
is willing to pay. I don't like Safe Audit very much because
if one of the company's ends its campaign before you are mailed
a check, you don't get paid. Setting up the is also a
lot of trouble since you have to copy the actual ad to your
web server and set up a different html code for every single
ad that you want to host. |
Amazon.com |

Will pay you a 20% comission for selling their
books. |
Hopefully, with my recommendations, you will find a sponsor that suits your traffic
level as well as your needs, and will allow you to expand your web site and conquer the
digital highway.
