| Damian on July 2, 2002 | CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Right then. Here's one for you, put the kettle on....
I have a Lite-On 24x 10x 40x and an LG DVD drive. I've been playing about with different types of CD recording utility. Everything was working fine until I uninstalled sodding easy CD creator 5 Plat edition. The lite-on drive has ceased functioning in windows. It's recoginsed by the BIOS. But, WinXP Device Manager says:-
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
Cheers XP!! Uninstallation of the drive doesn't help, neither does changing the IDE location (0:1, 1:0, 1:1).
I've tried reinstalling easy cd but that doesn't sort it. I've been to Microsoft.com and read and executed the information contained in (Q314060) "CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP". That was no use either!!
The DVD drive still works fine, as that uses the same drivers as the writer I think that it has something to do with the registry.
Help me please as I have about 3 days before my ADSL fills my hard drive!!!!
P.S. Nero is the best CD-RW software out there!! |

| Chalky on November 11, 2002 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP: SOLVED.
I had similar problem on Win2000: after install NERO 5.5 Packet Writer (Samsung-only edition) my CD-R/W device went to code-31 (Windows has disabled). I searched the web & found out from http://www.hauppauge.com/html/pvrfaq.htm that there are 2 reg keys that screw the device, I removed them both and re-scaned for PnP (or rebooted) after removing the device & all was well. The keys are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters".
Good luck. |

| ??HELP?? on January 5, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
1. So before i do all those steps should i uninstall the (i have 2) drives.
2. After i went to regedit i found the folder that was necessary. Inside i found "LowerFilters" but i didn't find the "UpperFilters". I did find another file though that was called "LowerFilters_1". Both of these files are the only ones that were the type REG_MULTI_SZ. What should i do?
(i have a dvd and a cdrw drive). |

I was at my wits end. I consider myself pretty savvy (not an expert) on my PC, but this problem was driving me crazy. Saw CDRW and DVD in BIOS, but not in XP. Could even boot to a CD. I was about to FDISK and reinstall OS, but this fixed it. Thanks everyone!

| Ziggy on January 19, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
I had this same problem the other day while using sbc yahoo dsl software. I was getting disconnected everyday so I tried their repair center, which told me that my network settings had changed and to reset them. Well, I knew my settings were ok, but if it would help my connection, I figured i would give it a try. So I clicked ok, and boom, my cdrom stopped working, besides all my network connections disappeared, and I couldnt create a new connection. Needless to say, I had to reformat in the end.
I did the registry thing and the cdrom came back. I went back to the sbc yahoo software and tried it again to make sure it really was the problem, and sure enough, it knocked my cdrom out again.
So if any of you are using sbc yahoo, I recommend not installing that software,or deleting it and just make your own connection through the internet connection wizard.
btw, when I reported the problem to their tech support they were more than happy to tell me that it was all my fault, and that that could never happen using their software. Then they told me to delete the software. lol. Then I was told I must have a virus, that they went to school for this kind of thing(which I have too, blah blah blah) and that I should have never messed with the registry. :) I could go on, but I'm sure you've heard it all before.
I never had this problem before eventhough I had the easy cd creator installed for quite some time. In my case, it wasnt until I installed and used sbc yahoo dsl software that it happen to me.
Just thought i would pass this on.

Hi dear Chalky or anybody,
I have Windows 95. I inserted a CD formatted with the Easy CD creator on another PC. I heard strange noise, than my CD drive dissappeared. I tried the method you suggested, but after Control, I do not Have Class, or the number you say. PLease advise if you can. I am a total layman, but I will carry out instructions.
Thanks

|
| Nick on February 13, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Andrea,
Generally, if you hear a noise before something just quits it indicates a hardware failure.
To check, go in the BIOS and check if you can still see the drive, if you can't, it's probably dead.
Since there are so many different manufactures I can't really tell you how to get to the BIOS on your computer (especially without knowing what it is). It should say on screen right when you turn it on, probably F1, F10, or DEL and it might be labeled "Setup" instead if BIOS. You're looking for four lines that could are labeled Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, and Secondary Slave. The number of CD drives there should equal the number of CD drives you actually have.

| Andrea on February 14, 2003 | RE: CD-R Has disappeared from Windows 95
Hi Nick,
I have an IBM 310 notebook. The only place I found BIOS is Control Panel/System/Devices.
I find Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller, and under that Primary IDE Controller (single fifo) and Secondary IDE Controller (single fifo). They both have yellow exclamation marks next to them. In properties, they both have this message: This device is not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. See hardware documentation. (Error code 10).
Any suggestion what to do?

Following the instructions on microsoft support (MS DOS Compatibility Mode Problems with PCI IDE Controllers), I deleted NOIDE value from Current Control Set/Services/VxD/IOS, and that restored my CD drive. Thanks for putting me on the right track.

This fixed worked for me the 1st time, but like a dope, I tried EZCD yet again. Well now after deleting it, my dead CDRW drive, yellowed out, can't be uninstalled at all. Even when I removed those 2 reg keys. It's still saying that the direct CD drivers are no good? I deleted evey trace of Adaptec, Easy CD, etc from my computer and reg..... what to do? |
|
| 2/21/2003 on November 30, -0001 | I followed the steps above, but when I boot, windows doesn't load the keyboard or mouse. they both work fine in DOS as it's booting, but not in Windows XP.

First I had the same pbl as you "guest" but try using last good configuration known (F8 on start) then reboot n only delete this value:
'Lowerfilters' on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
