You may access the system registry by running the Registry Editor. To do that, simply go Start>Run and type "regedit" in the Run dialog box.
Once you are in the registry editor, you can navigate through the registry as you would for a regular windows directory.
To access the two specified keys, click on the following folders situated on the left hand side, in the specified order.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Once you have opened the last folder, you should see two keys on the right hand side ("Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters") which you may select and then delete by right clicking and selecting "Delete".
Alternatively, you could search for these keys instead of manually navigating to their locations. To do so, go Edit>Find and type either "Upperfilters" or "Lowerfilters" in the search field.
If you are unable to find these registry keys, it may be that they do not exist on your system. In such a case, this fix will probably not work for you.

I have Windows XP and a cdrw. I had heard that defragmenting my hard drive was good for it. So I defragmented my hard drive. After that I tried to install a game onto my comupter using a cd. The computer did not read the cd. The computer says that the cdrw is working fine. This computer is not hooked up to the internet. Can somebody help me? My email is normion@yhaoo.com |

I know little about computers and I can't find my cd rom icon in the control panel nor will cdrom work. I've looked for upperfilter and lowerfilter and they don't have them if they are important. My computer recognize I have new hardware but can't installed it because it can't find it on the internet. Please help!!!! |

I installed a fresh copy of XP pro and ran itno this rpoblem. I read about the fix on Micorsoft's website (Q320553). I follow the steps:

I have the same problem too, the uppperfiler and lowerfilters are not under this key, i have search and find some upperfilters under some other keys but not under the specifed key.
i tried to deleted the upperfilter which i have found under other keys, but it screwed up my whole computer, i re-installed xp, but the problem is still same. plz. someone help.......... |

Guys/gals, someone had a porblem before about what to do if the Upperfilters aren't there! I could be a complete dozatile idiot but i don't think aanyone told him/her what to do.
Now, my Cd-drive has gone, i've gone into the registry and there was ONLY lowerfilter. So, the question stands, what do I do now there's no upper?

Installed fresh Win XP and installed up to SP2. My CD-RW is nowhere to be found on this win XP. However , i have another Win XP SP1 installation on the same computer (different HDD) which still reads and writes to the CD-RW like it's supposed to. But the new Win XP SP2 hasn't got a clue. Can't find the CD-RW anywhere..

Solution that worked for me:
There seem to be two different kinds of "missing CD problems". Some people can see the CD/DVD in the Utility Manager (maybe with a questionmark), but they can't see it in the My Computer window. These people seem to have a bunch of solutions already (upper/lower limits, regfix, uninstall/reinstall).
Then there are those that can't find the CD/DVD at all, neither in My Computer or Utility manager. In my case the solution for this was to uninstall a nVidia nForce IDE SW driver, that replaces the default Win XP ATA drivers. I had the nForce 5.10 installed on my ASUS A7N8X-E m/b and that caused the CD/DVD to disappear entirely from my system, not just from the My Computer window.
I also came across a similar topic where an Intel user experienced the same problem and came up with the same solution. He too uninstalled the (Intel) driver that replaced the default Win XP ATA driver.

Ok, Here's the fix.
If you know for sure that the CD/DVD drive is working then:
Download and run this script.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
You can check it out before running it by right-clicking the file and choosing edit to read it.
The script will set your registry the way it shoud be. Don't reboot yet.
Go into the device manager and uninstall the IDE controller.
Download and install the latest motherboard chipset drivers.
Now Reboot. Everything will work... Hopefully. This is how I finally got my missing CD/DVD RW back. |

I agree with Elias on his second step. I have an older msi mainboard, had xp on it for LONG time with no problems. I tried to install a Hard drive(HD) on the secondary IDE channel along with my cdrom, and only one would show depending on what was pinned Master. (I battled this for a week)
IF you are not dealing with the Upper/Lower filters keys, then try going into device manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, right click Secondary IDE Channel and select uninstall. After XP is done uninstalling, immediately right click IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and choose "Scan for Hardware Changes". XP reinstalled the Secondary IDE channel and then both my original and my new drives.

In windows XP my cd-rw drive appears in My Computer and can read like normal, but can only write from Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, not any other program. I can't make a CD in any music players, or windows movie maker. |

I deleted some folder cdrom in registry by accident and when I reinstalled drivers, old keys are back but drive only reads dvd normally. cd and cdrw the files don't show, it only shows free space to write on. Other programs such as real player, can play the audio cd even though windows says 0 bytes used. If anyone could help I would be sooo appreciative!! |

I have tried just about every fix I can find. I do not have the upperfilter or lowerfilter in the registry. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling secondary ide drivers, tried a new cdrw drive, uninstalled and search for new hardware, etc. nothing seems to work. My bios can see the drives, they appear in the system control with the little yellow ?. Everytime I try to reinstall I get the message that some things did not load correctly.
I would appreciate any new suggestions.
I well try just about anything instead of doing a new XP install. |

I THink i found a soultion
The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file. Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.
To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in: sfc /scannow
This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and make sure of their correctness, replacing any files that it finds with a problem.
A bos should appear to give an indication of how long the process is taking.
If all goes as it should, any corrupt, missing or incorrect files would be replaced by this process. However, as with most actions in this world, things can go wrong and the following should help!
The most frequent complaint with scannow /sfc is that a dialog box appears asking you to insert your Windows XP CD-ROM to continue.
Why does this happen?
There are several settings in your computer's registry that are checked when you run scannow /sfc.
As stated before, the Windows File Protection constantly monitors for any changes to the main system files. These are usually stored in:C:WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache (C: in most cases is the root drive)
The dllcache folder is extremely important so Windows XP hides it from you! To view it go to:
My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> "uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
There is normally no need for the original XP CD to be inserted as your computer has a copy it can get hold of in this cache.
But, if the Dllcache folder, or part of it, has become corrupted for some reason then you will be prompted for the XP CD - so your computer can get a clean copy!
However, not ALL installations of Windows XP have ALL the system files cached into this folder! You may only have around 25-50MB of files in this folder under Windows XP depending on the settings in the registry.
HOW TO WORK AROUND THIS
As well as having a cache of all the system files on your PC, you should have the I386 folder from the XP CD installed on your hard drive. After doing this, it is quite simple to modify the registry to tell it the source path for these files.
This prevents 99% of requests for the the XP CD with Windows File Protection and the I386 folder also contains many other files that are sometimes needed by the operating system and this stops those requests for the XP CD,as well.
HOW TO PUT I386 ON YOUR ROOT DRIVE:
Step 1
You will need to get your XP CD and locate the folder called: I386
This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is going to be C:\ so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:\I386
Step 2
Your computer needs to know that you now have the necessary files on your PC. This is done by editing the registry. Here's how: (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu)
By navigating to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side.
The one we want is called: SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:\ Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change to the drive letter of your root drive, probably C:
Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again! |

Things get more and more complicated.
The solution with the upper and lowerfilters gave me my drive back on screen but he did not read the disc. So I reinstalled the drivers, rebooted and all seemed to be OK again till I opened the drive and inserted the same (or another) disc. The drive was present on screen but again did not read the disc. Reinstalling the drivers, rebooting and all was fine again till the next time I opened the drive. So each time I want to read a disc I have to install the drivers and to reboot.
I also tried "sfc /scannow" but allthough the program did his work it gave no solution.
I think that I pinpointed the problem in the operation of opening and closing the drive but I don't have the knowledge to proceed the search.
Maybe one of you may have a flash of inspiration.
BTW : I have the problem on my HP laptop. My desktop runs the same OS (Windows XP Pro SP2) and software w/o any problem at all. |

ON: XP SP2, I have the same problem, in explorere I've lost my DVD/CD drive. It shows up in device manager, but I get this message as an error:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
I have tried to remove any instance in the registry, but some won't let me delete them. Any thoughts?

I seemed to have some complex version of the problem, which is finally solved)
My CD-RW drive (a lite-on cd-rw 24102M) just disappeared from my DELL DIMENSION 4400 after I installed a Zonet USB 2.0 / Firewire card in an expansion slot. Logically, there is no reason this should occur, since the expansion slots are not on the IDE bus. I am guessing the problem occured due to the USB 2.0 drivers that were installed from a CD that came with the Zonet card.
Regardless, I sat there dumbfounded that I couldn't eject the CD from the CD-RW device. The green light just stayed lit solid, but the eject button didn't work, nor did I see a CD drive under My Computer nor under the Device Manager.
I tried doing the step of removing UpperFilters and LowerFilters from the registry, as was stated above, and is also clearly stated at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553.
Not only did that not completely solve my problem, but it appeared to hose me later.........IT TEMPORARILY TURNED MY CD-RW device into a CD-ROM (read-only) device.
After I deleted the upper and lower filters, the CD drive still wasn't showing up at all (not even in the BIOS). So, the steps I ended up taking were the following:
1. While I had the computer turned on, with the cabinet open, I carefully unplugged the power to the CD drive. Then, I plugged it back in. This step was somehow necessary after using the paper clip to initially eject the stuck CD.
2. I manually switched the jumper on the back of the drive from auto-detect setting to MASTER drive setting.
3. I could at this point now see the drive, but it was only working as a CD-ROM device. Roxio couldn't get to it to format any CD's, nor could I drag/drop any files to any already formatted CD.
SO, THEN I HAD TO GO BACK TO THE DEVICE MANAGER, AND "IMPORT" the settings that I had deleted.
And, lo and behold, after hours upon hours upon hours of debugging and trying different things, my
lite-on cd-rw 24102M drive is now not only once again seen by my Dell Dimension 4400, but it also functions again both as a CD Reading device, and as a CD Writing device.
I am glad that is overwith. I hope this helps someone out there. |

Finally fixed mine. Did a "User File Signature Verification". Do Start, Run, type in sigverif and then click OK. File signature verification opens. Click Advanced. Click Look for other files that are not digitally signed. In the Look in this folder box, enter C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Click OK. Click Start to begin. It will list "unsigned driver files". Some of these may be okay unsigned, but some of them cause problems. I copied ones from a computer running Windows XP Pro that didn't show up as "unsigned". I used the Microsoft website downloadable program that creates 6 floppy setup disks and did this on another computer as I could not access my computer by ANY of my drives and didn't have a boot disk. If you have a boot disk, by all means use it to boot. I renamed the "unsigned" files with a .bak and copied over the following files of which some were the culprits: cdaudio.sys, fs_rec.sys, io8042prt.sys, mnmdd.sys, null.sys, rasacd.sys, rdpcdd.sys, vga.sys, and sfloppy.sys.
After rebooting, everything worked, CD-RW, DVD, floppy. Prior to this, the floppy was saying any disk that was put in it was "not formatted" and then when you would try to format it, it would have an error, couldn't format. I have seen this error written about other places, but this corrected that problem also. If you have a boot disk, use it to boot your computer and copy over the files. If not, download the program that creates the 6 floppy disks. It is supposed to be so you can install/reinstall XP if your CD-ROM isn't recognized, but it also contains the Restore option and lets you access c:\windows and access your CD-ROM so you can install files or Windows XP. For instructions on how to use these diskettes if you don't know how, do an internet search. Check out this site for the File Signature Verification information:

Finally did it!!!
I first did the Registry-"Hack" but that didn't work.
After this i tried to uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller driver and then Searched for new Hardware so that the ATA/ATAPI driver was newly installed. (If the system tells you that it can't find VIAIDE.sys it is under System32\Driver in your OS Folder) Then i went back to Device Manager and let him scan for new hardware. Some Magic and one of my lost Harddrives and the CD-Rom were back. Unfortunately in Explorer my CD-Rom had a NetworkDrive Icon. With some little work (changing the drives letters and later switch back) in the DiskManagement i finally did solve the remaining problems and now have all my things back and normally working, if there exists anything that works normally under Winschrott....

Step 1.
Reboot your whole computer, clean it out and all , save all your work.
Step 2.
It should work now, it worked for me when i did, i didnt reallly want to reboot, but i had 2. |

Thanks a lot. I removed the upper and lower filters and my cd was back again. After spending hours on finding the proper drivers. Thank you Thank you Thank you. |

You are great. Stopped at this site after looking for new drivers all over the web with no results. Had the same problems as the rest. 1st uninstalled the IDE & reinstalled it with no results. Then went to the regedit & removed the upper & lowerlifters & now have my dvd & rw back. Thank you very much. You save me an ever great headache than I had in the beginning. |
